It seems better than it was before, but I was thinking if service center wouldn't do better job than me. I have bought USB dock, but I'm not sure I did my best. However, after I did an additional USB Fine Tune on Pixel basis, the results are even much better, just perfect.Īlso AF-consistency seems to benefit from a perfect adjusted lens to your camera body. The results that I got were much better after I got it returned from Sigma. I saw it with my 50-100 f1.8 that I sent in together with the D500. The good thing is, that you can adjust a lens even more prcise as what you will get from the maufacturers. I did it for four Sigma/Tamron lenses and the result is nothing short of stunning.Įspecially lenses with F2.8 and below very much benefit from AF adjustment.Įven if you don't see it in the first place, in most cases an improvement can be seen after tuning. In most cases you gain a decent sharpness/focus performance gain by doing AF tuning via the USB dock. In only very rare cases, third party lenses have perfect AF out of the box. I would HIGHLY recommend you to buy the Sigma USB Dock and do some fine adjustement with your lens(es). I guess I could use manual focus if I need to nail the shot. I'm not sure about infity, but it is also better than it was before the adjustment. It's still not perfect at closest distance, but it's better than before. At closest distance, dock values weren't enough. Later I did some test shots on tripod and I was surprised how much off this lens was. I was convinced my copy is alright and doesn't need adjusting. However, I feel like 50-100 will be more useful and practical, not only for portraits.įunny you mention this - I also didn't want to adjust the lens with the dock at first. I had a chance to try out sigma 135 art and it is perfect portrait lens. I'm thinking of getting sigma 50-100 in the future. So I have some mixed feelings about this lens now. My copy didn't need much calibration, +- 3 throughout the range. I didn't want to calibrate it first, cause it's a pain, but calibrated it after some tests. That's my observation after calibrating this lens with USB dock station. It's not consistent enough, and with focus at 6+ feet it becomes even less consistent. And focusing problems became obvious at infinity. 1.8 is not sharp enough for me, but 2.8 is OK, maybe even 2.5. I can say that after getting the D7200 with 24 mp and sigma 50-100, the sigma 18-35 looks a bit mediocre in terms of sharpness comparing to 50-100, it's ok in the center but not that good in the corners, and stopping down doesn't bring corner sharpness to excellent. I took several shots without dog as well and there was nothing in the sky, so I'm not sure if it really was dirt on the camera or lens.īTW, I do still wonder, though, if those parts of my photos that are in focus are sharp enough. I swear I'm not lost cause, but I don't know how I could miss something so obvious.Īs for processing, I only did some basic editing in Lightroom, including sharpening and bit of clarity brush, too. It seems that sometimes simple answer can be very helpful and eye opening. Thank you, though, for taking your time to reply. I wasn't really thinking too much it seems LOL. Tbh, I was never shooting landscapes and such and usually did only portraits wide open in the past, therefore I didn't realize at all that when someone says 'this lens is sharpest at f4' I would still have to stop it down to make everything in the picture sharp. I'd love to see some of your photos out of this lens and maybe tell me I'm silly and there's no point studying pics at 100% Or maybe I really am just studying details and looking at downsized photos online, I have convinced myself my photos aren't good enough. Given f1.8, would you say sweet spot for this lens is around f4-5.6? I feel like lens is not that sharp even using manual focus, but what do you think could cause it? Higher ISO, some dirt? Idk. Also I have studied photos that I took using manual focus as well, so then the lens should perform its best. I've seen some super sharp photos out of this lens online, but perhaps they're not that sharp when viewing at 100%?! I feel like my cheap Nikon kit lens was sharper Before you tell me it's front/back focus issue, I have played around with lens and the dock and it seems ok. Maybe I have become pixel peeper lol and now I'm on the edge whether the lens is performing well or not. The thing is, I'm not sure if my expectations are unrealistic. I've had this lens for awhile, but it just doesn't seem to live up to the hype. I'm little unsure about the results I've been getting from sigma 18-35 art.
